The Gelato Festival World Masters is heading for its World Finals, and three more finalists are now confirmed. They came out of the Rest of Europe and Mediterranean Area final, held on 13 and 14 July at the Gelato Museum in Italy.

How the final worked

The 28 best gelato shops from 17 countries took part, chosen through events held over the previous four years. Their flavours were judged live online by a technical jury:

  • Giancarlo Timballo, gelato master and president of the Gelato World Cup organising committee
  • Sergio Colalucci, gelato master and committee member
  • Mentore Valandro, gelato master and committee member
  • Beppo Tonon, gelato master and coach of the Italian team that won the Gelato World Cup in 2020

The three winners

These artisans will represent their countries at the World Finals in Italy in December 2021.

  • Mathieu Eyckmans, Oyya, Bruges (Belgium): “Gorgonzola Fig”, a creamy, savoury gorgonzola gelato paired with a sweet fig coulis.

About the competition

The Gelato Festival World Masters is run with Carpigiani Gelato University, which has 20 campuses in 19 countries, and with Sigep, the leading trade show for artisan gelato, organised by Italian Exhibition Group. The Italian second semi-final (76 artisans) was set for September 2021, the Italian Final (16 participants) for October, and the World Finals for December. The Gelato Festival began in Florence in 2010, inspired by Bernardo Buontalenti’s first gelato recipe of 1559, and has since grown to 64 festivals across Italy, Europe and the United States.
