The Gelato Festival Challenge, the travelling competition searching for the world’s best flavours, made its next stop in Dordrecht, the Netherlands, on 7 February. The goal was to find finalists for the Gelato Festival World Masters 2021.

How the day worked

The event was run with Carpigiani Benelux, and 26 gelato artisans took part, aiming to represent the Netherlands at the World Masters 2021, the championship that selects the best gelato makers from five continents. Each chef prepared their gelato in a kitchen supplied by the organisers. Industry experts, local chefs and food journalists then tasted and judged the results.

The top flavour advances to the European Finals of the Gelato Festival in Italy in 2020.

Who is behind the Challenge

The tour is organised by the Gelato Festival with Carpigiani Gelato University, the school for gelato entrepreneurs, and Sigep – Italian Exhibition Group, the leading trade show for artisan gelato. Its mission is to spread artisan gelato culture around the world.

Achille Sassoli, Carpigiani Market Development Manager, said artisan gelato is increasingly appreciated across the Netherlands and that Carpigiani was keen to discover the flavours Dutch chefs would put forward. He expected the winning flavour to be a strong contender at the Grand Finale for the “World’s Best Gelato” title.
