Greece was the last stop on the selection circuit of Gelato Festival World Masters, the travelling international competition that searches for the world’s best gelato flavours. On September 23, nine gelato artisans competed in Athens for a place in the Greek Finals, set for October 30 and 31, 2025, in Italy. The 2022 to 2025 championship is organised by Gelato Festival with Carpigiani Gelato University and Sigep by Italian Exhibition Group, the leading B2B show for artisan gelato, pastry, bakery and coffee.
How the day worked
Competitors prepared their gelato in a kitchen provided by the organisers, and industry experts, local chefs and food journalists tasted and judged the results. The three best flavours advanced to the Greek Finals at the Carpigiani headquarters in Anzola dell’Emilia, Bologna.
The event began in Florence in 2010 as “Gelato Festival”, inspired by the first gelato recipe, created by architect Bernardo Buontalenti in 1559. It grew across Italy and Europe, reached the United States in 2017, and then became a world championship. The 2017 to 2021 edition involved over 3,500 gelato makers and was won by Adam Fazekas of Budapest.
